Meet Mighty Mommas Founder

Hi, I'm Portia

Mighty Momma!

I am a book editor with a PR & communications background, and the mom of a smart and energetic five year old boy.

The idea to start Mighty Mommas came to me when my son was almost two years old. When I was pregnant, there was so much I didn’t know. I wasn’t aware of many of the resources that were available for pregnant women. Even after several Google searches and asking around, I was always led to the same three spots: Department of Social Services, WIC and Medicaid. I knew there had to be more information out there but it wasn’t promoted.

I wanted to create a destination for single mothers to access resources for us and our children.  Those resources include information on childcare, grants, financial literacy, scholarships, careers, mental health and more.

As moms, if we don’t take care of ourselves first, it becomes more difficult to effectively raise healthy and happy children. The saying “you can’t pour from an empty cup” rings true here.

Self-care is more than pampering ourselves – self-care is nurturing our mental wellness, crying when we need to let it out, taking a few hours of “me time” when we can and establishing healthy boundaries with people. Self-care also includes educating ourselves. Knowledge is power and can have a positive impact on our lives. As a mother of one, I learn something new every day about parenting.

My vision for Mighty Mommas is to create a community where single mothers can gain access to the necessary tools to lighten our loads and enhance our lives.

Hi, I'm Portia!

I am a Rochester, NY native with Jamaican roots and mom to Kingston. I love a good book, good food, Netflix and my comfy couch! I am also a freelance book editor with a public relations and communications background who believes education is the key to creating the life that I desire.

I knew there had to be more information out there but it wasn’t promoted.

I wanted to create a destination for single Black mothers to access resources for us and our children.  Check out some of those resources here.
